Back to Work 2010-2011 School year
So today was our first day back to work. At least we got to meet at Old Country Buffet for breakfast at 9:00. Tomorrow I will have to be at work at 7:40, so today was great because I got to sleep in a little. The afternoon was a bit tough because the last time I was at work with all of my friends in the Tiki, we were preparing for the baby. I was sad to be starting my 16th year of teaching and still not being a "mom". So what can you do but go on and wait to see what tomorrow brings. Hopefully, better times on the horizon.

Sorry, sorry, sorry
I haven't written an update in a while for several reasons, one being I didn't know what to write. I have attached an explanation about what happened at the beginning of the summer. I am sharing this story so you are up to date. At this point, we have not discussed our next steps. I am still waiting for someone to knock on the door and hand me a baby. Just kidding.
Our trip...
I am going to try to explain a little about our journey down to New Orleans/Baton Rouge. We flew down on Sunday and actually got in about 30 minutes early. Eric and I rented a car and decided to go into the French Quarter for dinner. We ate and then started our drive to Baton Rouge. On the way to Baton Rouge we called our social worker. We told her we were on our way to Baton Rouge and she said that she would call in the morning. Eric and I arrived at our hotel, which was nice. It had a desk and a table instead of a sofa. I was thinking that I should ask to change rooms the next day because I wanted somewhere else to with the baby other than the bed and uncomfortable chairs.
The next morning Eric and I woke up, and I made a waffle because I didn’t think I would be able to make one with the baby the next day. When Eric and I went back to our room to shower, the social worker called. She wanted us to come to the agency because the baby was not going to be released from the hospital and she needed to tell us something. So we headed to agency to find out what could be wrong with the baby. We knew that the baby was small; we were told the baby was taken early because the baby’s abdomen was small. We were also told that the baby was in with drawl from the antidepressants from the mother. This was not a concern because lots of people take antidepressants. Eric and I were trying to think about all the possible things that could be wrong with the baby. From the picture of the baby, physically she looked fine. However, in the picture you could not tell how small she was because there was nothing in the picture to compare.
So when Eric and I arrived at the agency we finally meet the social worker, and she tells us that the nurse in the NICU said that the baby’s head was small. The small head is not normal because usually the head of any baby is much larger than the rest of their body. So this baby has a small body and a small head. We were told that they were doing test on the baby but those results would not be back for a week. The social worker tries to contact the nurse but she cannot be reached. We leave the agency knowing that when the nurse calls back they will set up a time for a conference call to take place. So Eric and I leave the agency and go explore a little around Baton Rouge. At this point we think that the tests are going to reveal whether or not the baby is going to be healthy or not.
As we sit down around 3:00 to eat something, the agency calls us back and says that the nurse is calling back in ten minutes for us to do our conference call. So we go back to the agency to wait for the call. Eric took the lead with the questions, he was amazing. He has been amazing this whole time. He is my rock. Anyway, we got the nurse on a conference call and Eric started asking questions about the test that were going to be run on the baby. We were told that the baby was not healthy and the tests would only reveal if the cause of the small head was a virus. So there would be no way to tell if the small head size could lead to cognitive problems later in life. The nurse also told us that the baby was in with drawl from opiates, which would not have been in the antidepressants the birthmom was taking. So we finished the phone call with the nurse and told the agency we had a lot to think about, and we left. Eric and I talked and we didn’t feel comfortable taking a sick baby home. We understand that children get sick and they are not perfect but we wanted to at least start with a healthy baby.
We met with the social worker on Tuesday morning at the agency. The agency also had another social worker sit in the meeting with us. We told them that this was not the baby for us and they said that that was fine. The agency has two other couples already who may take the baby. The agency has 180 days to get half of our money back to us. They have all of our money, and we do not have a baby.
That is pretty much all that has happened over the past few days.
